PhD Candidate in Environmental History 19th–20th Centuries (Université Lumière Lyon 2) – deadline 25 May 2026

The Université Lumière Lyon 2 is looking for a PhD Candidate on the topic of ‘Environmental History in the 19th and 20th Centuries: Knowledge, Transformations, and Societies’.

This doctoral project focuses on environmental history in the 19th and 20th centuries. It examines how relationships between societies and environments were shaped by industrialisation, imperial expansion, technological change, and increasing pressures on natural resources. The dissertation resulting from this PhD will explore how environments have been observed, transformed, governed, and debated, at the intersection of environmental history, history of science and technology, and social and political history.

The exact time period and geographical area of the study will be defined jointly with the supervisors Stéphane Frioux and Katja Doose. The PhD student will be participating in the research divisions ‘Environment, Territory and Health’ and ‘Knowledge, Actors, Dynamics, Spaces’ divisions of the Laboratoire de recherche historique Rhône-Alpes (LARHA).

Applications (in English or in French) should be submitted ultimately by 25 May 2026, 23:59 Paris Time.
