Call for Research Assistants (MA students; Wageningen University) – deadline 10 October 2025

The Environmental and Economic History Group at Wageningen University is looking for motivated master students with expertise in economic history and/or social history. The students will contribute to creating a database on the demographic impact of cholera throughout Europe at the regional level, in the context of an NWO-funded grant entitled ‘Cholera Contagion: The Role of Climate and Mobility in European Pandemics’ .

The project relies on printed primary and secondary sources, and therefore experience with these will be welcome, even though specific acquaintance with demographic sources is not required. Also, it will be valued that the candidate has (reading) knowledge of European languages other than English, Dutch, Spanish or German. To foster cooperation with the project members, it is recommended that at least some part of the work is performed in Wageningen.

The selected candidates are expected to begin in November 2025.  The salary conditions are the standard ones applying to all Dutch universities and the amount of hours to be worked will be set in agreement between the student and the project leader, with a bare minimum of 8 hours per week.  The employment duration can be negotiated, though given the scope of the project it will not be longer than a full year starting in November 2025.

Applications should be submitted ultimately on 10 October 2025 by e-mail including an up-to-date CV and a motivation letter of 500 words max. to project leader Dr Daniel Gallardo Albarrán.
