8th Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food – registration open now!
On 5 and 6 June 2025, the 8th Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food will take place at Allard Pierson, University of Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food is the bi-annual international point of assembly and an exchange of knowledge in the field of food history in the Netherlands. This year’s symposium will be on the theme ‘Food and the City’ and is a special edition because it takes place in the 750th anniversary year of the city of Amsterdam.
The conference will feature presentations on topics ranging from historical food markets and culinary labor to contemporary urban agriculture and food justice movements. In addition to academic sessions, the program includes presentations and roundtables designed to spark conversation across fields.
The keynote lecture at this year’s symposium will be delivered by Professor Kate Brown, the Thomas M. Siebel Distinguished Professor in the History of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
