First biennial symposium Environmental History in the Medieval and Early Modern Low Countries

The first biennial symposium Environmental History in the Medieval and Early Modern Low Countries will take place on 25-26 October 2024 at Leiden University. This symposium is dedicated to sharing recent research, work in progress, and points of discussion in the field of environmental history conducted by scholars in the Netherlands and Belgium. This event aims to facilitate the exchange of recent research, ongoing projects, and key discussions within the realm of environmental history among scholars from the Netherlands and Belgium.

The two-day program will include, on Friday 25 October, plenary sessions where senior and junior scholars, postdocs, PhD and ResMA-students will present recent/current research and state-of-field overviews (clusters of 20 minutes presentations, 10 minutes Q&A) concerning environmental history. This is followed by a roundtable discussion on ‘Approaches to Environmental History in the Medieval and Early Modern Low Countries’. On Saturday 26 October, Professor Richard Hoffmann (York University, Toronto) will give a keynote lecture.

Participants who would like to present their research at the symposium should submit their abstract (max. 300 words) and a short biography by e-mail to the organisers by 15 March 2024. All topics and fields regarding medieval and early modern environmental history are welcome, including, but not limited to, water, landscape, climate, biodiversity and natural life.

The call for Contributors has closed on 15 March 2024.
